Make a smart and informed choice while you choose steel for construction.
Considered as the backbone of the Indian economy, steel rebars occupy a dominant position in the socio-economic development of the country. With the growth of Indian economy at a fast rate the demand for steel rebars is also showing an upward trend. India is the 5th largest global crude steel producer and shall grow up to be the second largest producer of steel in the world by 2015.
Steel making process is witnessing considerable change as new processes of manufacturing steel rebars are taken up, using various grades of iron, coal and gas to achieve lower cost of production while conserving environment and energy. In midst of all these developments, Indian steel industry can be divided into two broad categories:
- Primary Steel Manufacturers, also known as integrated steel producers (ISPs) include large steel producers with high levels of backward integration and capacities of over 1 MT (million Ton).
- Secondary Steel Manufactures are smaller stand alone steel plants, which are producers or processors or both producers and processors of steel. They use scrap sponge iron and pig iron combination to produce semi finished or finished products using electric arc or induction furnace.
- Primary Steel manufactures enjoy a strong hold on the quality due to their superior manufacturing techniques and product offered. Primary Steel manufacturers use virgin Iron Ore and deploys state-of-the-art steel making and refining process that gives you clean and homogeneous steel quality as compared to secondary manufacturer’s product that use scrap and ingot for steel melting without any secondary refining process.
As mentioned earlier, primary manufacturers have a very controlled manufacturing process which results in controlled steel chemistry with low levels of sulphur and phosphorus. While, secondary manufacturers employ induction furnace for melting process that leads to no control over the chemical composition which in turn results in structure instability. Also primary manufacturer uses latest rolling technology like Jindal Panther utilize HYQST perfected by Siemens USA, which produces rebars with fine grain multi-phased composite structure with high strength and ductility. HYQST process is 100 times better than the outdated rolling process and technology used by the secondary manufacturers.
Jindal Panther, a primary steel manufacturer, produces rebars with a uniform parallel rib pattern engraved through computer-controlled notch making machines. These parallel ribs result in excellent bond strength with concrete unlike the X-rib pattern used by secondary manufacturers. The X-rib pattern has a low fatigue life and reduces bond strength with concrete to a great extent.
Jindal Panther offers value for money products since their rebars meet UTS/YS ratio and high percentage elongation. UTS/YS ration stands for Ultimate Tensile Strength to Yield Strength which increases the earthquake resistant qualities of the rebar due to high energy absorption, which makes it a preferred choice in the market. Also, steel rebars by these manufacturers produce rebars that surpass minimum specified level of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which assures quality of these rebars. As against these, secondary manufactured rebars have lower resistance to cyclic loading which is not recommended for the seismic zones. And also, these rebars barely qualify the minimum specified levels of BIS putting a question mark on the quality provided.
Almost all Primary Steel Manufacturers have pre-defined and transparent pricing, so the consumers can relax and buy rebars without the fear of being cheated or overcharged. The fixed and uniform rates can be verified through authentic price lists at dealer’s shops of these manufacturers. Whereas, rates of secondary manufacturers fluctuate daily, as are linked to raw material movement like scrap & ingot.
Since steel rebars form an integral part of construction today, and in a sense it is the very foundation of every structure that is constructed, make sure you take informed and healthy decisions while making a choice between primary and secondary steel manufacturers.
